Dr. Carter and his family recently returned from a two-week mission trip in western Kenya where they served with World Medical Mission to provide orthopedic care to those in dire need of medical care. The team worked at Tenwek Hospital, which has an orthopedic training program for Africans. Dr. Carter spent much of his time with the orthopedic residents to build relationships and assist in their training.
Dr. Carter performed a wide variety of surgeries, most of which were treating trauma, infections, and bad wounds. However, he was also able to treat some joint replacement and revision patients. He was excited to have performed the first anterior total hip replacement at Tenwek Hospital – and possibly in the entire region of Kenya!
While Dr. Carter was busy in surgery, his wife and four kids visited and played with children in the pediatric ward and long-term housing facility, sharing small joys like stickers and bubbles with them. The kids also had plenty of time to explore the area and hunt for chameleons and other creatures. The family ended their time in Kenya with a safari, where they spotted elephants, zebras, hippos, lions, and a leopard.
Dr. Carter and his family left with full hearts and rich memories, thankful to have spent formative time with the orthopedic team and the many patients at Tenwek.
The other MCJR physicians have all spent time overseas providing medical care for those in need. Our team cares deeply about sharing their gifts and medical skills to serve those who would otherwise live in severe with untreated issues.
