The surgeons at MCJR are always looking to improve techniques and remain at the forefront of innovations in joint replacement surgery. While they have performed thousands of successful total knee replacements over the years, Dr. Wesley Lackey sought to understand more about a new approach called the Jiffy Knee™.
In an effort to continue improving results and give patients a better recovery after knee replacement, Dr. Lackey is now licensed in the Jiffy Knee™ replacement. He is one of only three surgeons in Indiana who offers the Jiffy Knee™, and is the only surgeon in the Indianapolis and Bloomington areas.
The Jiffy Knee™ is not a different implant; it’s a different surgical approach. The difference between a traditional total knee replacement and the Jiffy Knee™ lies in how the surgery is performed.
How the Jiffy Knee™ is Different
In a traditional total knee replacement (TKR), the surgeon typically splits the tendons above the knee during the surgical exposure. This approach is extremely effective, and the TKR patients at Midwest Center for Joint Replacement have given a 98% satisfaction rate. However, this approach can lead to more postoperative pain, slower early recovery, and longer dependence on walkers or canes.
With the Jiffy Knee™ approach, the surgeon “lifts” the muscles and tendons rather than splitting them. By preserving the quadriceps muscle and tendon, the surgeon can reduce surgical trauma and allow the knee to function more naturally right after surgery. Many patients are able to walk soon after surgery, climb stairs sooner, and regain strength faster compared to traditional methods.

Benefits of the Jiffy Knee™
-
Faster Recovery: Many patients experience quicker mobility and less stiffness in the early weeks after surgery.
-
Less Pain and Swelling: Muscle-sparing techniques typically result in reduced postoperative discomfort.
-
Outpatient Procedure: Most patients are able to return home the same day.
-
Earlier Return to Daily Activities: Getting back to driving, work, and hobbies often happens sooner.
-
Same Proven Implant Longevity: The durability and long-term success of the knee replacement itself remains the same as traditional surgery.
