Published: Clinical Calculator Reduces Infection Risks – Dr. Daniel Gerow

We’re proud to share that one of our own orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Daniel Gerow, has recently published an important new study focused on improving patient safety in joint replacement surgery. His research introduces a clinical calculator designed to predict a patient’s risk of infection within 90 days after hip or knee replacement.

Total hip and knee replacements are among the most successful procedures in modern medicine. People can regain their quality of life and maintain an active lifestyle afterward. However, one of the most serious complications following these surgeries is peri-prosthetic joint infection. Although this is still relatively uncommon, infections can have a significant impact on recovery, overall health, and quality of life.

In this study, Dr. Gerow and his colleagues analyzed data from more than 220,000 joint replacement procedures through the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI). Using this large dataset, they developed a predictive model that evaluates a variety of patient-specific and surgical factors to estimate infection risk.

One of the most valuable aspects of this research is its focus on modifiable risk factors (things patients can improve before surgery). These include body mass index (BMI), smoking status, and preoperative opioid use. The study also identified additional factors such as use of assistive devices and surgeon volume as contributors to infection risk. By understanding these variables, surgeons and patients can work together to reduce risk before surgery even takes place.

The calculator developed from this research is designed to be used in real time during clinic visits. It allows surgeons to show patients how changes in their health habits may directly impact their risk, supporting more informed, shared decision-making.

Dr. Gerow hopes this tool will be a meaningful resource for patients considering joint replacement. By combining data-driven insights with personalized care, this study represents an important step forward in improving outcomes and ensuring safer surgeries for our patients.
